What is a GFCI outlet?

A GFCI outlet protects you from electrical shock when moisture is present. These are installed in wet locations such as garages, basements, and within six feet of sinks, kitchens, or bathrooms. A GFCI outlet can be identified by the two buttons on the face; one reads “test” and the other reads “reset.” The “test” button causes the outlet to turn off and the “reset” button will turn the power back on. If the outlet does not reset after pressing the “reset” button then there may be a problem and you will need to contact an electrician.

Should I be worried about outlets that don't work?

If there is an outlet in question the first thing you need to do is to test it. To do this find a small lamp and plug it into the outlet. Flip on all wall switches in that room. If the lamp turns on when the switch is flipped this is because some outlets are controlled by a wall switch. If a switch doesn’t control the outlet then check to see if other outlets or lights are out. Check the electrical panel to see if any circuits are tripped. If they are, simply reset the circuit breaker. If you check all of these and the outlet still does not work be sure to call an electrician to evaluate this issue. There may be a short somewhere.

Why do my lights flicker?

Lights can flicker because of an outdated electrical system. The electrical panel or wiring will need to be replaced. They can also flicker from a loose wire, insufficient power supply, or another appliance on the a circuit drawing too much power. It is best to have the problem evaluated by an electrician.

What is tripping my circuit breaker?

If circuits are being reset only to have the breaker trip again there could be a more serious problem. This could be caused by a power hungry appliance; space heater during the winter or an air conditioning unity during the summer. Sometimes the circuit needs to be increased. If a 15-amp circuit keeps tripping then it may need to be changed to a 20-amp. This should only be done by a licensed electrician.

What is the difference between conventional circuit breakers and AFCI?

Conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads and short circuits. They don’t protect against arcing conditions. AFCI stands for Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter. They are designed to protect against fires caused by arcing faults in electrical wiring. AFCIs are required in the United States for residential bedrooms.

Why is my light switch hot?

If you notice your light switch is hot this could be a sign of a serious issue that could potentially lead to electrical fire. This could be caused from the switch being overloaded, the switch failing, or faulty wiring. Whatever it may be, you should have a licensed electrician look at the problem as soon as possible.
